The beloved Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche has said about the Sūtra of Golden Light:

“This text is very precious; it brings peace and happiness and is very powerful to stop violence. By hearing this text, one’s karma is purified.”

Rinpoche has made it his mission to propagate the Sūtra everywhere for world peace.

The Sūtra of Golden Light is a treasury of protection.

The Sūtra of Golden Light (Suvarṇabhāsottamasūtra) has over centuries been a much revered text  in Asia in times of great crisis, as it has the power to immediately protect the person who recites and all sentient beings around from calamity, protect the whole country from violent attacks, harmonize the environment, bring peace to the world and ultimately lead the beings who connect to it to enlightenment.

Everything comes from the mind.

According to Buddhism, everything, good or bad comes from our own minds, by way of harmful or helpful mental attitudes in the past and the present, positive, or negative emotions, healing or destructive deeds.

Problems come from the negative mind,
solutions come from the positive mind.

And if it is a fact that our own collective and individual minds and actions can create a problem, we also have the power to solve it by way of our own minds and actions!

We have power.

While seeking political and humanitarian solutions is crucial, we must therefore simultaneously activate our most fundamental source for protection from harm and conducive conditions for peace and harmony: the power of the positive mind.

Many helpful practices are available.

The Buddhist tradition offers many possible practices, beginning with the generation of love and compassion, not only to our friends, but also to our enemies, prayers, tantric practices relating to protecting and healing deities like Tara or Medicine Buddha, purification practices and all are effective.

The Sūtra of Golden Light is special.

However, some have proven to be exceedingly influential and one of them is the recitation of the Sūtra of Golden Light.

Why is this?

Because the Sūtra contains everything that could possibly set the mind on positivity within a short time.

There is nothing better than feeling surrounded by the protection of buddhas and wishing to become a protecting buddha oneself.

Speaking of the profound qualities of Buddhahood and the eternal duration of enlightenment, it immediately inspires a sense of comfort and connects the mind to its own most sublime potential for purity, which is the ultimate refuge of every living being.

Getting rid of the causes of suffering, negative karma.

It provides one of the most cherished text sources for the purification of negative karma.

Generating the causes of happiness: love and compassion.

It greatly facilitates the development of love and compassion for suffering beings and a sense of refuge regarding evolved beings.

The ultimate cause of happiness: bodhicitta.

It leads the mind into bodhicitta, the wish to protect all sentient beings from all harm oneself. And it gives succinct instructions on ultimate reality, emptiness of all phenomena, the door to liberation.

The ultimate protection: the wisdom realizing emptiness.

With purification, the mind of enlightenment and the wisdom realizing emptiness, protection from doing and receiving harm begin to be activated and start to shine in one’s mind.

Positive connections and temporary protection.

Having presented the ultimate sources of protection the text brings our human connectedness of various other realms of existence to awareness: the whole universe is positively affected when the Sūtra is recited. It therefore promises the affection and protection of powerful, loving kind denizens of higher realms of existence for everybody who even utters four lines of the sūtra and it promises the pacification of elements such as earth, water, fire and wind.

Bodhisattva-conduct: protecting others from suffering.
Protecting one’s realm by way of selflessness and morality.

With outer and inner protection in place we learn how to protect others in the chapter on righteous kingship: a righteous king who does not cling to his power and his own advantage, not to this side or that side, a king who governs with morality, with justice and self-sacrifice, will protect his people. Self-serving kingship will destroy the country, its people and the environment.

The Buddhas own lives: protecting by giving everything.

Amazing chapters on how the Buddha himself exerted kingship in accord with the dharma and with immeasurable generosity in previous lives follow. We learn how the Buddha protected the ten thousand fish from starvation and led them to the dharma, which later brings them to enlightenmennt. We read about the heart-breaking event of his life as a prince, when he offered his own body to a hungry mother-tigress and her cubs.

Experience shows it works.

Over the last two decades thousands of people have experienced the limitless beneficial impact of the Sūtra on a personal level and many groups have formed, who recite it regularly for others, knowing that this activity is among the few in this world, which will have only positive results for everybody and no negative side effects for anybody.

Bio Dr. Birgit Schweiberer (Ven. Lobsang Drime)

Born in 1961, in Germany, Ven. Birgit practiced as a physician before she met Buddhism in India and became a nun in 1998.

Studies

Following advice from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, she studied two FPMT Masters Programs in Sutra and Tantra and one Basic Program under the precious guidance of her much loved main teacher, Ven. Geshe Jampa Gyatso and other Tibetan teachers at Lama Tsongkhapa Institute in Italy from 1998 until 2014.

From 2014 till 2018 she completed her traditional studies with a Western academic curriculum and acquired a bachelor’s degree in Buddhist studies at the University of Vienna.

Teaching

During the twenty years between 2000 and 2020 she also actively served as Teaching Assistant for the Basic and Masters Programs at the Institute, enjoying the connections with students from all over the world, including Israel, and led many long-term study programs and meditation retreats for Dharma-Centers mainly in Italy, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

Emphasis

Her passion is teaching and leading retreats on texts and commentaries from the Indo-Tibetan Tradition like The Path to Enlightenment (Lamrim), texts on the vast bodhisattva conduct like The Bodhisattva’s Way of Life (Bodhicāryāvatara), Śāstras on the profound Middle Way like Fundamental Wisdom, Madhyamakavatāra or the inspiring literature on Buddhanature, likewise Sūtras such as the Heart Sūtra or the Diamond-Cutter-Sūtra and others, in order to connect Western students to the wonderfully inspiring and highly rewarding works of wisdom and compassion of the Buddha and great Buddhist masters, in a practical and humorous way.

The Sūtra of Golden Light

One of the texts which have become particularly dear to her and much requested by centers and students is the Sūtra of Golden Light (Suvarṇabhāsottamasūtra), which she had the opportunity to hear first from the much-venerated late Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche who always recommended it so enthusiastically wherever he taught, since it has the power to promote world peace and enlightenment.

She translated the Sūtra into German and taught it on many occasions in German speaking Centers, Italy and Śrī Lanka, to the several groups that have emerged which recite the Sūtra on a regular basis for world peace, especially for the benefit of countries oppressed by war and violence.

Retreat

Since 2021 Ven. Birgit is in long-term retreat and does not actually teach at present. However, upon request by her dharma friend and teacher, Ven. Losang (Rita Rineker), who currently endures the bombings together with the Israeli people, and the special actual need, she has agreed on giving an essential teaching on the Sūtra of Golden Light so that it might be recited by Israeli Dharma students for the peace and the safety of everyone.
